## What is Advent?

Advent is the season of waiting and preparation before Christmas, and the start of the church year in Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and many other churches. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which always falls between November 27 and December 3, so Advent lasts between 22 and 28 days. Many families light one more candle on an Advent wreath each Sunday. Advent calendars usually count down from December 1, whatever day Advent itself starts.

Advent is not a holiday. The stat holidays come at the end of it: [Christmas Day](https://canadastatholidays.ca/holidays/christmas-day) everywhere in Canada, and [Boxing Day](https://canadastatholidays.ca/holidays/boxing-day) in some provinces.
