## What is Lent?

Lent is the season of prayer, fasting and giving that prepares Christians for Easter. It lasts 40 days, recalling Jesus' 40 days in the desert. Sundays are not counted, which is why Ash Wednesday comes 46 calendar days before Easter Sunday. On Ash Wednesday many Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and other churches mark foreheads with ashes. In the Catholic Church, Lent formally ends on the evening of Holy Thursday, when the three days of Easter begin. Other churches count it to Holy Saturday.

Fasting customs differ by church. Many Christians give something up, eat no meat on the Fridays of Lent, or fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Your own parish or congregation sets the rules it follows.
