Who gets holiday pay
- You must have been employed for at least 30 calendar days before the holiday.
- You must have worked or earned wages on at least 15 of the 30 calendar days before the holiday (or worked under an averaging agreement in that period).
- There is no rule about working the day before and the day after.
How holiday pay is calculated
Statutory holiday pay is an "average day’s pay": the wages paid in the 30 calendar days before the holiday divided by the number of days you worked. It is owed even if the holiday falls on your regular day off.
Working on the holiday: If you work the holiday you get 1.5 times your wage for the first 12 hours and double time after that, plus an average day’s pay. Employees who do not qualify get regular pay for hours worked.
When a holiday falls on a weekend or your day off
An eligible employee is paid an average day’s pay even when the holiday falls on their day off. An employer and employee can agree to move the holiday to another day.
In 2027: Christmas Day falls on a Saturday.
