Days off that are not statutory for federal workplaces
Banks, schools or government offices may close on these, but employers do not have to give a paid day off.
Who gets holiday pay
- Applies to federally regulated workplaces: banks, airlines, interprovincial trucking and rail, telecom, broadcasting, federal Crown corporations and similar.
- There is no minimum length of service.
How holiday pay is calculated
General holiday pay is at least 1/20 of the wages (without overtime) you earned in the 4 weeks before the week of the holiday. Commission employees with 12 or more weeks of service get 1/60 of the wages earned in the 12 weeks before.
Working on the holiday: If you work the holiday you get 1.5 times your wage for the time worked plus holiday pay. Continuous operations may give a holiday with pay at another time instead; managers and professionals get regular pay plus a substitute day.
When a holiday falls on a weekend or your day off
If New Year’s Day, Canada Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Remembrance Day, Christmas or Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday that is a non-working day, the holiday is given on the working day immediately before or after. Other holidays that fall on a non-working day are added to your vacation or given on another day.
In 2027: Christmas Day falls on a Saturday; Boxing Day falls on a Sunday.
