Who gets holiday pay

  • There is no minimum length of service.
  • You are not entitled if you are absent without permission on the holiday when scheduled, or on your last scheduled day before or first scheduled day after it.

How holiday pay is calculated

General holiday pay is a regular day’s pay if your hours are the same every day. If your hours vary, it is 5% of your gross wages (without overtime) in the 4 weeks before the holiday. Construction employees get 4%.

Working on the holiday: If you work the holiday you get 1.5 times your wage for hours worked plus holiday pay. Gas stations, hospitals, hotels, restaurants and continuous operations may instead pay regular wages plus another day off with pay within 30 days.

Calculate your holiday pay

When a holiday falls on a weekend or your day off

If a general holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday you do not work, your next regular work day is a day off with pay. If it falls on a weekday you do not normally work, you get a work day off with pay before your next vacation. Orange Shirt Day cannot be moved.
