Days off that are not statutory in Alberta
Banks, schools or government offices may close on these, but employers do not have to give a paid day off.
Who gets holiday pay
- You must have worked at least 30 days for the same employer in the 12 months before the holiday.
- You are not entitled if you were absent without consent on your last regular work day before or first regular work day after the holiday, or did not work the holiday when scheduled.
- If the holiday is not a normal work day for you, you are only paid if you work it. With an irregular schedule, it counts as a normal work day if you worked that weekday in at least 5 of the 9 weeks before the holiday’s week.
How holiday pay is calculated
General holiday pay is the "average daily wage": the wages you earned in the 4 weeks before the holiday divided by the days you worked in that time. It leaves out overtime, vacation pay, general holiday pay and discretionary bonuses.
Working on the holiday: If the holiday is a normal work day and you work it, you get your average daily wage plus 1.5 times your wage for hours worked, or your regular wage plus another day off with average daily wage. If it is not a normal work day and you work it, you get 1.5 times for hours worked.
When a holiday falls on a weekend or your day off
Holiday pay in Alberta depends on whether the day would normally have been a work day for you. If it would not have been (a weekend, for most), and you do not work, nothing is owed. If the holiday falls during your vacation, you get a day off with pay.
